Regional Counselors

A Regional Counselor is an alumnus volunteer, appointed by the Grand Chapter on a yearly basis, who is charged with the responsibility to work with and assist chapters and colonies in his region. Our Regional Counselors are an integral part of the Regional Plan, and spend many hours each year visiting, helping and counseling our undergraduates, organizing and attending regional conferences, and participating in national events such as the School of Fraternity Practices/National Convention, the Chapter Leadership Conference, and the Deranian Presidents Conference.

Members interested in serving on the Regional Staff can download an application from the website or contact the International Headquarters. Theta Chi Fraternity is always in need of alumnus volunteers for these important positions.

Some Regional Counselors hold regional recruitment workshops, new member retreats, and officer retreats. As the titles suggest, these are special events coordinated by the Counselors in each region and designed to bring officers or new members together to enhance the regional concept and to help our leaders learn and grow together.

Ways to Make a Regional Counselor Visit Productive
PRE-PLANNING
Your Regional Counselor will contact the chapter president to establish a good time to visit with the chapter and its leaders. Be sure to pick a good date and timeframe that will allow for a productive visit. Inform your chapter of the visit and what is expected of them. Let everyone know that the Regional Counselor is a Brother, and is a representative of the Grand Chapter and that he is visiting to assist the chapter. Unlike an LEC, a Regional Counselor is a volunteer and is taking time away from his busy schedule and family to work with your members.

GREETING AND TOURS
Greet your Regional Counselor when he arrives. Provide proper introductions to members of your executive board and other members of your chapter. Give the Regional Counselor a tour of the house and your campus. Provide him with a sense of your surroundings and your chapter's living and learning environment. He is always willing to try out a great local restaurant.

ASSIGNMENTS
Be prepared for the Regional Counselor's visit by having a schedule of appointments (when applicable) and any forms or information he may have asked for during his initial contact. Examples include: a list of chapter officers and their contact information; a chapter budget; your new member education program; chapter goals.

MEETINGS
Remind the chapter members that they need to be present at any group meetings and meetings they signed up for. These meetings are necessary for the Regional Counselor to fully understand the group so he can give suggestions and ideas to help the chapter.

BE ON TIME
Make sure members show up on time for all scheduled meetings.

BE OPEN AND CANDID
Be as open and candid with him as he is with you and the members of the chapter. The Regional Counselor is a Brother there to help with any problems. It is much easier for him to give suggestions and solutions for your problems if you are open, candid, and honest with him.

RESPECT
Your Regional Counselor is a Brother and a guest of your chapter. Please treat him as you would want to be treated--with respect and consideration.

LISTEN & FOLLOW UP
The Regional Counselor will give your officers and members a number of ideas to improve the chapter. Listen to these suggestions and try to implement them into your chapter. If you need additional help or guidance, feel free to contact the Regional Counselor after he leaves, or any member of the International Headquarters Staff.
