What is a LEC?

Our Leadership and Education Consultants

The Leadership and Education Consultant Program was established in 1923, with the appointment of Harold A. Fellows, Kappa/Pennsylvania '21, as Traveling Secretary. The hiring of a full time employee to visit all chapters, provide assistance, and report on the progress of the chapters was made at the same time as the decision of the Grand Chapter and National Convention to establish a headquarters for the fraternity. The headquarters, first located at 110 East 42nd Street in New York, was opened in the autumn of 1923.

The title of Traveling Secretary was changed to Field Representative and ultimately, in 1990, to Leadership and Education Consultant. The title of Leadership and Education Consultant reflects the duties which our Consultants have today in terms of working with chapter and colony members and emphasizing the academic and educational mission of Theta Chi.

Our Consultants are recent graduates who are full time professional employees of the Fraternity. They begin their careers in June with an extensive training program that continues through Convention or the Chapter Leadership Conference. They then depart for chapter and colony visitations.

The responsibilities of our Consultants include working with undergraduate and alumnus members and chapters, and our colonies. During their visits, our Consultants meet with officers, members, new members, alumni, and college or university administrators. Our Consultants review the performance of each chapter in over fifteen different areas of operations, and offer suggestions and recommendations for changes and improvements. Their reports are read by over twenty different persons and information from the reports is used for many purposes.

The life of a Consultant is extremely challenging, and extremely rewarding. Few members will have as much of a positive impact upon Theta Chi Fraternity over the course of one or two years than a Consultant, who may visit over one hundred chapters and colonies during his tenure.
