The Grand Chapter, Theta Chi Fraternity’s international board of directors, has announced that it has unanimously voted to revoke the charter of Beta Upsilon Chapter at California State University, Fresno. Effective immediately, the chapter is closed and is no longer considered an active chapter within Theta Chi for any purpose. Prior to this action, the chapter was on suspended status since Sept. 1, 2012.
This action was taken following the receipt of reports in the days and weeks following the tragic loss of Philip Dhanens, who pledged the Fraternity on Aug. 31, 2012. These reports indicated that violations of Theta Chi Fraternity’s alcohol policies occurred within the chapter. The violations run in direct contradiction to Theta Chi’s policies, standards, and stated objectives.
The revocation of the charter is the most serious action the Grand Chapter may take against a chapter. This action carried with it the full support of the chapter’s alumni leadership. The International Fraternity and local alumni have been in contact with Fresno State officials and have their support for this action as well.
Theta Chi Fraternity continues to keep all those affected by the loss of Philip Dhanens in its thoughts and prayers. The International Fraternity remains committed to cooperating with local authorities and university administrators as the investigation into this tragedy proceeds, and has complied with every request that has been made of it by local law enforcement authorities to date.
Founded in 1856, Theta Chi Fraternity is a men’s collegiate fraternity with over 170,000 initiated members and has established 222 chapters. Leadership development, personal development, and service to alma mater are fundamental to Theta Chi Fraternity’s mission. Theta Chi Fraternity has a strict anti-hazing policy and strict guidelines prohibiting underage alcohol consumption for its chapters. The Fraternity expects its chapters and members to uphold these policies.
The Beta Upsilon Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity was chartered at Fresno State on Oct. 17, 1942. Over 1,300 men have been initiated into Theta Chi at Fresno State throughout its nearly 70-year history. The chapter has produced numerous successful alumni who have made many contributions to the professional world and their respective communities.
