Gamma Upsilon collegian honored during National Volunteer Week

The following appeared as a post to the Bradley University Facebook page (facebook.com/BradleyUniversity). It was reprinted with permission from Renée Richardson, Associate Vice President of the Bradley Office of Marketing and Communications. The post highlights Aaron Coulombe (Gamma Upsilon/Bradley 2022).

Aaron Coulombe '22 has had his sights set on a career in emergency medicine. When he found the opportunity to volunteer with the West Peoria Fire Department at the activities fair during his freshman year, he knew it was the perfect fit. Almost two years later, the initial introduction has led to Aaron spending 15-20 hours a week serving our surrounding community as a volunteer firefighter.

Donating his time is not something new for Aaron, whose mother was influential in teaching him the importance of giving back to those in need. He believes that we all have something unique to contribute to our communities.

"College students have the power to change their local communities if they step outside of their comfort zone for just a little bit to do something they wouldn’t typically do. That small action can really change someone’s world."

In the midst of the pandemic, Aaron continues to volunteer with the fire department. While COVID-19 has brought immense challenges for his role, it's also brought opportunities for community outreach, like riding by the homes of local children on their birthdays. Challenges and all, he’s grateful for the opportunity.

"Through the fire department, I have been able to meet so many amazing people, both members of the fire department and members of the community. I am also able to see a real pay off in my education, as I can apply some of what I am learning on a greater level."
