When the parents of two members had been diagnosed with cancer last spring, the members of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Colony decided to team up with the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center to aid in their initiative to combat cancer.

Being inspired by the brothers at Psi Chapter at the University of Wisconsin, the colony decided to host a ‘Shave for Cancer’ event. For the event, brothers of RIT Colony pledged to shave their heads for a specified donation.

Though challenging circumstances were presented, that did not stop the brothers of RIT Colony and the staff of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center from reaching their goals of raising cancer awareness and raising funds for a worthy cause. More than $2,500 was raised at the event, and 13 members of RIT Colony shaved their heads. With the proceeds, RIT Colony was able to make a large donation to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, and they were able to aid in paying the medical bills of one brother’s family.

“The ‘Shave for Cancer’ event was the first philanthropic fundraising event organized by RIT Colony since its recognition in 2014,” said Colony President, Ian Bixby. “We attribute the success of the event to the resources provided to us by the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, and to the support of those who contributed,” he added.
