In March I spoke with Brother Garrett Shetrawski , Theta/University of Massachusetts 2016, as he was just beginning his run for Massachusetts State Representative in Worcester's Second District. With the Nov. 4 election quickly approaching, I decided to check in with Shetrawski to see how things were going on the campaign trail.

What has been going on with you since we last spoke in the spring?

“I have knocked on more than 5,000 doors, attended fundraisers, public speaking engagements and have just been in the public getting my name out. We had a dismal turnout for the primary, but I am feeling confident. My race is one of the most watched in the state,” said Shetrawski.

Has the campaign been what you expected, or have you encountered any surprises along the way?

“It has actually been more than what I expected, and it gets cooler as it gets closer. In the beginning it’s about building relationships, learning about people and what they are going through. Then you see them out and about and they know who you are because you had knocked on their door. The next time you knock on their door you ask for their vote.  It’s a cycle, and you learn just how small the world really is,” Shetrawski said.

How are things looking in the polls?

“I am running in a swing district and things could go either way - it's definitely going to be a close race! Also running against the incumbent is always a challenge. But, around here people like youth and that I am young, so I have that to my advantage,” he said.

I’m not sure what things are like in your area, but here they are expecting a very low voter turnout – possibly the lowest in more than a decade.

“Voter turnout is always lower in a non-presidential election year. We are trying to spur people to come out to vote through the mail, speaking engagements, and through various forms of social media,” said Shetrawski.

What are your plans for Election Day?

“I will be hitting all the polls in the district, visiting diners and restaurants,. We will also have people out holding signs. That night we will have a party at American Legion where we will be watching the returns. I should know about 1 to 1.5 hours after the polls close if I have won,” he said.

Any final words for our readers?

“As for Theta Chi, I feel that my brothers have been very supportive of me throughout my campaign. A few are even coming out for the party on Election night. I’m feeling confident, it has been a great experience and something that I will always remember,” Shetrawski said.

Should brother Shetrawski win, he will be the youngest State Representative in the history of Massachusetts. Best of luck Brother Shetrawski!
