Photo Guidelines

Add a dimension of depth to your article or chapter news brief by including photos. When shooting and selecting photos, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

General guidelines

  • The element of surprise: most of the time, candid photos are more natural and interesting than posed shots
  • Leave it alone: avoid editing your pictures in Photoshop or other photo editing software Shoddy post-production can cause an otherwise beautiful image to lose detail, color and appeal. The Rattle editorial staff can and will determine if an image needs additional processing
  • Use a flash: believe it or not, good lighting makes a big difference. Always use a flash
  • Keep it clean: Do not submit photos of brothers consuming alcoholic beverages, holding up obscene or bizarre hand gestures or otherwise behaving in a way that is unbecoming of gentlemen

Technical specifications

  • Ideal resolution: 300 dpi minimum, 600 preferred
  • File size: 1 MB or higher
  • File format: .jpg or .tif preferred; do not submit photos in .bmp or .gif formats

The editor reserves the right to edit or omit submitted photos prior to publication. Not all submitted photos will be selected for publication. Submitted photos may be reproduced in other Fraternity publications.
