Steve Maeda (Beta Alpha/UCLA 1984) has had an impressive career as a television writer and producer. He has written episodes for the TV series The X-Files, CSI: Miami, Lost, and more recently Unforgettable. He also served as a supervising producer on Lost and CSI: Miami and as an executive producer on Lie to Me, Miami Medical and Day Break.

Maeda is currently working as an executive producer on his latest project, a TV series for the SyFy Channel, called Helix.

“I’ve been writing for TV for 14 years now,” said Maeda. “The last few as an Executive Producer/Writer. This project came to me via an overall deal I have with Sony Pictures TV,” he said. “Helix is a twisty, science fiction thriller. Cool (we hope), scary, suspenseful. It should air on Jan. 13, 2014,” he continued.

In the series, a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control travel to a research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak. The scientists soon find themselves in a terrifying life-and-death struggle. As Executive Producer, Maeda will be playing a major role in the series production.

“Executive Producers are involved in every episode,” said Maeda. “Lots of writing. Lots of producing. Essentially, it’s making sure everything goes right and having final say on the episode,” he added.

Although the series takes place in the Arctic, the series is not filmed on location.

“We’re shooting in Montreal,” said Maeda. “All of our exterior scenes will be CG (computer generated) effects,” he said. “It’s going to be really scary,” he added. “Hopefully, you won’t be able to sleep afterward,” he said.

As for the impact that being a member of Theta Chi has had on his life, Maeda had this to say.

“It was a terrific experience that has led to some great, lifelong friendships. Really made the college experience fun,” he said.

Brother Maeda shared his knowledge and experience as a Keynote Speaker at the 156th Anniversary Convention in Palm Springs, CA in 2012.  He challenged members to "dare to fail early and often" and to not be afraid to tackle things you initially struggle with.

Best of Luck, Brother Maeda!
